The Wine

The vines for Beaurenard's classic Châteauneuf du Pape grow on a mixture of limestone, sand, and the large pebbles so characteristic of Châteauneuf. The harvest is done by hand, followed by spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel vats, followed by aging in barrels and barriques. Beaurenard works very traditionally, blending all the white grape varieties permitted in the appellation in this wine, with Clairette and Grenache predominating. A very floral, fragrant nose full of blossoms and fruit. Radiating a great deal of freshness, white peach, exotic hints of pineapple, fresh citrus fruit, and a touch of honeydew melon and apple. On the palate, the Chateauneuf opens fresh and with intense fruit; then the tannins emerge, accompanied by an invigorating saltiness that vibrates on the tongue, so piquant and crisp, yet simultaneously wrapped in a smooth, silky texture. Plenty of yellow fruit on the long finish, the salty piquancy subsides, and everything sounds calm and balanced on the fruit. The 2023 still needs a bit of time, or rather a lot of aeration, to find a bit more harmony and balance. If you allow it, this will be a wonderfully smooth, soft, and extract-rich Chateauneuf that presents itself as fresh, stimulating, and energetic.
