The Wine
This exceptional Riesling comes from just over 40-year-old vines from terraced plots on the steep Disibodenberg vineyards, which were planted in 1976 and are now enjoying a fantastic drinking window. Spontaneously fermented, long on the lees, and aged in steel. In the glass, a dark golden yellow to amber color, the nose offers a fascinating interplay of earthy-malty notes with ripe citrus fruit and herbal spice. Then, in the mouth, an explosion of ethereal bitter orange peel, plenty of citrus peel and citrus fruit, along with saffron and a dark, tart spiciness. The residual sweetness of the Auslese is wonderfully balanced by the clear, refined acidity and the slightly bitter phenolics – a fantastic interplay of these components that makes this complex wine extremely drinkable and lingers on the long finish. Perfectly matured after 16 years, this Auslese from the Disibodenberg region possesses a great radiance that, despite its fullness and substance, will surely retain for the next 5-10 years. A truly exceptional wine, the likes of which you don't find in your glass every now and then. Highly recommended!
