The Wine
From almost 40-year-old vines from 1976 terraced plots on the steep Disibodenberg slope, grown on clay slate and sandstone. Spontaneous fermentation, long lees aging, and stainless steel aging. Golden yellow in the glass, the nose is dominated by wet stone, a barren stoniness, with hints of citrus. Then, in the mouth, it crashes mightily: an avalanche of stones overwhelms the palate, followed by a wave of fresh, yellow citrus fruits. It's a robust and completely uncompromising experience. Pure stoniness, salt, and freshness. The creaminess typical of Racknitz at least comes through slightly in the texture, preventing one from attributing the wine to a vintage of 2021. This freshness and focus after nine years of aging is truly impressive and involuntarily reminds us of the 2013 Nonnenberg from Georg Breuer. This is a great, bone-dry Riesling, if you appreciate rock wines, and the wine is just at the beginning of its drinking window, which still lasts for many years; it can easily age for a few more years. That is, if it hasn't already been drunk.
