The Wine
Opposite the village of Leiwen, where the Werner winery is located, lies the steep, south-southwest-facing Laurentiuslay vineyard, characterized by blue slate. Bernhard Werner typically produces his Rieslings from the Lau'lay region as off-dry wines. The yellow-fruity, fragrant, slightly smoky, slate-like nose is very refined with playful fruit. On the palate, ripe citrus fruit with apricot and peach, along with a lovely zesty acidity. The subtle residual sweetness complements this wonderfully and supports the enormous drinkability that is so typical of Werner wines. It's so delicious and juicy, yet stimulating and zesty; there's virtually no resistance to drinking it. It's truly enjoyable in the glass and is so typical of Mosel Riesling in the best sense: the interplay of sweetness and acidity, the concentrated fruit, underscored by the subtle smokiness of the slate, everything so defined and to the point, and yet so incredibly delicious – that's the Mosel.
