The Wine
Bernhard Werner descended into the cellar for us and unearthed some real treasures. One of them is his 2003 Auslese from Schweich's Annaberg. Deep golden yellow in the glass. The nose is ripe apricot, dried fruit, candied citrus, and delicate spice. It smells of deep late summer. And of ripe Riesling. In the mouth, it's dense, concentrated, buttery smooth, with a very fine, delicate acidity, the full spectrum of yellow stone fruit, all at full ripeness. Also, as in the nose, dried fruit, some candied citrus, and pineapple. The finish is full of ripe peach. Like a full bath in a sea of fruit. It smells and tastes of late summer, but with its hints of spice, it's probably even better suited to the colder season. An absolute charmer, currently in full swing. A generous, hedonistic selection, matured with dignity in the winery cellars.
