The Wine

The Großes Gewächs from Schweich's Annaberg is the more expansive of the two GGs. Ripe, beguilingly sweet fruits from tropical climes: mango and passion fruit, paired with juicy Mediterranean peach. Added are hints of meadow herbs and a spice that borders on saffron. Equally seductive on the palate: dryly matured, yet with a certain fruity sweetness, along with a light phenolic note that beautifully frames the acidity and extract. This Riesling is self-contained, soft, and juicy. It practically begs for something to eat. Thinly sliced roast pork on farmhouse bread with barrel butter goes just as well with it, as does a seafood risotto with saffron threads. Bernhard Werner is a true seducer, and this Riesling is clear proof.
