The Wine
Bernhard Werner's Riesling Trittenheimer Apotheke Auslese 2003 has spent the last 20 years in the winery cellars, ripening to perfection under optimal conditions. What now enters the glass makes us truly happy. A very fragrant, complex nose. Is that celery? In the first few minutes, everything is pretty crazy; there is indeed something fresh from the vegetable garden, some smoky slate, plus citrus, fresh and ripe, and also candied. And, of course, plenty of yellow fruit. With a little time, this shifts back and forth, and there is also a very present mango, very ripe, but then also unripe and green, which involuntarily reminds one of oyster shells. It is a kaleidoscope of aromas rising from the glass, difficult to grasp and totally fascinating. It continues seamlessly on the palate: a burst of ripe, sweet mango, with plenty of candied citrus and pineapple, yet wonderfully fresh, with a fine acidity underpinning everything. The sweetness is perfectly integrated; nothing sticks, everything floats, and it has an incredible flow. For hours, the wine continues to shift between the different aromas; everything is in motion and vibrant—a truly exceptional wine. The interplay of sweetness and acidity is in perfect balance; despite its richness of aromas, the wine is focused and lean, dancing on the tongue and flowing weightlessly across the palate. This is truly great, rare, and perfectly ripe!
