The Wine
This dry Riesling comes from the heart of what was once the most famous vineyard in the Nahe region, the Schlossböckelheimer Königsfels, and is made from vines approximately 40-60 years old. Spontaneously fermented, long on the lees, and aged in stainless steel. In the glass, it's a light golden yellow. The nose is dusty, stony, and darkly spicy, with thyme and marjoram, a hint of candied pineapple, citrus fruits linger, and hints of tropical fruit are discernible. In the mouth, structure, extract, and phenolics are all tightly interwoven. Plenty of herbal spice, plenty of rock, a touch of bitter orange and tangerine, and more hints of tropical fruit. The piquant spiciness lingers on the palate and continues with plenty of grip into the finish. This is fresh and muscular; after 11 years of maturation, the wine reveals itself in an almost youthful manner, far removed from any signs of age, and also completely free of heat, in case anyone is worried about the hot 2011 vintage. A robust, structurally sound wine, a real pleasure to drink in the glass now, and for years to come!
