The Wine

The great red from Paterna, 1,500 bottles total production. Sangiovese with a touch of Colorino, from approximately 40-year-old vines. Organic farming since the 1980s. Hand-harvested in several rounds with rigorous selection, followed by 16 days of fermentation on the skins, followed by 12 months of aging in used barriques and another 12 months in bottle. A wonderful, captivating, and intense nose with expansive aromas. A typical Sangiovese, full of red and black fruit, underpinned by cocoa, anise, and spices. A dense, soft, and elegant start on the palate, followed by fine-grained, slightly tart tannins. Again, plenty of red and black fruit, ethereal spice, and a certain animal meatiness, with a long and intense aromatic presence. The Vignanova is a medium-bodied wine, typical of traditionally vinified Sangiovese. Nothing here is fat, heavy, or powerful; everything is lively, light, and elegant, with simultaneous aromatic depth, complexity, and length. It's wonderfully fine and balanced, yet calm and unfussy, with a soft and velvety texture. A great Sangiovese from the picture book we often quote. But that's just how it is. Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates authentic Tuscany in a glass!
