The Wine
In the highly renowned Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard on the Mosel's steep slopes, old Riesling vines grow on stony red slate. This slate is only found sporadically on the Mosel, but always imparts a delicately spicy character to the wines. A very precise, direct nose, almost a bit piquant. Plenty of cassis and red fruit, with smoky, dusty, stony slate notes and a subtle spice. In contrast to the fragrant and bright 2020, the overall nose here is darkly spicy, stony, and very red fruity. On the palate, you immediately sense the 2021 vintage with its present and ultra-precise acidity. The wine dances on the tip of the tongue, totally lively, challenging, and fresh. Added to this are incredibly intense aromas of fresh, yellow lemon and clear, juicy red fruit, all underpinned by a subtle slate spice. A powerful salty piquancy follows, lingering on the captivating, aromatic finish. This is an impressive, high-intensity wine with a wonderful interplay of sweetness and acidity, tremendous vibrancy, and a fascinating, unusual aromatic spectrum. It will gain in composure and elegance with bottle age, but its intense, impetuous character already makes it an experience.
