The Wine

Barbera from Monforte, aged for 16 months in second-use French barriques. Profound, dense, black cherry fruit with a core of sweet, black fruit extract. There it is again, the blackest of all cherries, the kind found almost exclusively in Piedmont. It's so intense, and so delicately wrapped in a veil of spice and ethereal notes. Licorice, grated almonds, a bouquet of ethereal herbs, balsamic notes, orange peel—it's a whole range of aromas that unfolds further with air. On the palate, the Barbera really packs a punch. Juicy red fruit, the acidity cutting right across the mouth, followed by an intense, piquant saltiness. It's fleshy and dense, yet bone-dry and structured by tart yet fine tannins and full of ethereal freshness. This is full on, highly intense in every respect, and a true feast, exactly to our taste! With plenty of aeration, this is already a real treat, best served with rustic Italian cuisine. But there's also plenty of potential here for the coming years, when the aggressiveness and power will be somewhat toned down in favor of more velvet and silk. A magnificent Barbera!
