The Wine
Formerly a small vineyard on the outskirts of the village of Barolo, Via Nuova was incorporated into the larger Terlo vineyard during restructuring. Chiara Boschis's "Via Nuova" is now a cuvée from seven different Langhe vineyards: Terlo, Liste, Paiagallo, Ravera di Monforte, Mosconi, Gabutti, and Baudana. Aged for two years in French oak, partly in barriques and in large containers, it displays dark, spicy, red, and black fruit aromas. Sweet black cherries dominate, with balsamic notes, a touch of coffee, cocoa, and roasted hazelnut, followed by the ethereal freshness of eucalyptus, mint, and a touch of rosemary. Ripe dark fruit on the palate, surrounded, as on the nose, by dense aromas of cocoa and hazelnut, all wrapped in fine tannins. Very lean and finely structured, with crystal-clear, intense aromas and fresh, invigorating acidity; everything seems to be in its place, orderly, and self-contained. This is a wonderfully delicate and aromatically expressive Barolo that is a pleasure to drink. Further bottle aging will bring some calm to the tannins and more harmony to the wine; then, at the very latest, all doors will be open.
