The Wine
From the Bassolino, dell'Orino, and Cancelo Rosso vineyards, located at elevations of up to 500 meters, with vines that are on average around 20 years old. The different locations with their different soil compositions bring complexity and richness. Completely destemmed and rigorously selected grapes, maceration for three weeks, followed by 45 months in large oak barrels. The Versante currently needs plenty of air; a few hours in a decanter are essential. Then emerges an engaging aroma of ethereal spice, eucalyptus, iodine notes, medicinal overtones, and dried Mediterranean herbs. This is complemented by pickled black cherry, a profound black fruit core, underpinned by leather and tobacco, woody notes, undergrowth, and aromas of wild mushrooms. Everything floats and fragrant, absolute weightlessness, delicacy, sublimity. A vast spectrum of aromas, an incredibly complex, intense fragrance, yet noticeably lean and delicate, simply totally defined. The first signs of maturity and accessibility are evident, even though this wine is still far from its prime. It continues on the palate with its lean and structured character, featuring berry-like red fruit and intense sour cherry. Juicy, yet lean, with a salty acidity and fine-grained, coating tannins. Crystal-clear and fresh, totally vibrant and engaging, but never overly rich; the greatness of this Versante lies in its incredibly finely drawn, subtle style. With plenty of aeration, it's already captivating now, but will gain in harmony and elegance over many years of aging. A truly great, truly classic Brunello!
