About Pian dell' Orino

Jan Erbach has created something special in Montalcino, in the heart of Tuscany. Born in Baden, he studied viticulture after completing his winemaking apprenticeship in Geisenheim and then set out to explore wine-growing regions in France and Italy. Here in Montalcino, he first met his wife Caroline and ultimately stayed to devote himself to the renowned Brunello di Montalcino and to vinifying next-level red wines. The vineyards are biodynamically cultivated with Demeter certification. The old Sangiovese vines are nurtured and cared for, and the extreme selection of the grapes means that each vine produces only about one bottle of wine. This is about maximum focus, the ultimate extraction of the highest quality.
Thus, there is little intervention in the cellar; primarily, the wines are simply given time and freedom to develop. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in open fermenters. Aging generally takes place in large oak barrels, allowing the focus to be on highly refined and fresh fruit, with a subtle and extremely elegant spiciness. You won't find intense wood notes here, nor will you find a jammy, smooth mouthfeel. The Pian dell' Orinos are high-performance athletes, wiry, muscular, yet totally defined, possessing a Burgundian delicacy and finesse that is unparalleled in Tuscany. Jan Erbach has managed to climb into the top ranks of the great Montalcinos, and even here he plays a prominent role.
