The Wine
The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino comes from the individual vineyards of Scopeta, Pian Bassolino, and Pian dell'Orino. Grown at an altitude of 300-500 meters, vines 15-20 years young. Rigorous hand-selected grapes, maceration for three weeks, followed by 28 months in neutral, 30-hectoliter oak barrels. The Rosso rises from the glass fragrant and darkly spicy. Sweet black cherries, ethereal notes of bay and eucalyptus, earthy hints. Beguiling, yet fine and delicate, with subtle tones. A soft, velvety, red-fruity entry on the palate, followed by fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a salty piquancy. It floats weightlessly across the palate, utterly elegant and velvety, red fruit framed by fine, ethereal spice. A wonderful interplay of silkiness and grip, a Rosso di Montalcino full of elegance and delicacy, which will showcase these characteristics with increasing keenness over the coming years of bottle aging. This is a great classic Sangiovese.
