The Wine
From 30-year-old vines on a tiny, 0.58-hectare plot. 2015 bottles total production. Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel, followed by 24 months in oak: 12 months in first and second filling barrels, then another 12 months in used 15-hectoliter containers. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Profound, dense, and ripe black fruit on the nose: cherry, plum, blackberry, then hints of raspberry and wild strawberry, incredibly dense and juicy. At the same time, the bouquet is tart and spicy with hints of clove and anise, yet exuding a clear, ethereal freshness. It's almost perfumed, with violet and rose, then cherry blossom. The nose is wonderfully complex and full of life; everything is in motion. On the palate, a generous, soft attack, then the tannins rush in, but are completely fine-grained and supple. Once again, the full fruit basket, embedded in the finest tannin structure and spicy, slightly bitter notes. Fine acidity, subtle saltiness. The wine has wonderful grip on the palate, a lovely length, and expressive aromatics, exuding a tart, savory character despite all the fruit. A great Lagrein, which really benefits from plenty of aeration and large Burgundy glasses.
