The Wine
The Rothenpfad vineyard name is no coincidence – red slate forms the foundation for the old Riesling vines here. This is evident in the wines; especially in contrast to Clemens Busch's other Rieslings from the Marienburg parcels, the Rothenpfad has a somewhat more generous style with typical red slate aromas. The 2021 Rothenpfad GG displays a somewhat more open nose than the Fahrlay Terrassen, which we tasted directly next to it. Yellow fruit, white peach, but also some red fruit such as currant, very aromatic and dense, yet slatey, smoky, and darkly spicy. A very piquant mouthfeel, with salty, laser-like acidity, only slightly denser, more substantial, and more voluminous than the Fahrlay Terrassen GG. Not quite the focus, not quite as purist and austere, but simply a bit more inviting and approachable. And it's endowed with a dark, spicy and red-fruity aroma that you won't find anywhere else in the Marienburg vineyard. A powerful wine from the Rothenpfad vineyard, great stuff!
