The Wine

Sankt Antony owns six hectares in Nierstein's Orbel vineyard, the site on the Roter Hang with the greatest distance from the Rhine. This steep, south-facing vineyard benefits from cool nights, as the side valley location allows for cool airflow to the river. The 2021 Orbel GG displays a soft, relaxed nose, completely unexciting. Ripe stone fruit, peach comes through clearly, with a light spicy undertone, slightly smoky, burnt candle wick, and slate, which also becomes apparent with more aeration, increasing slate-like spice and complexity. The palate also has a soft attack, very approachable for 2021, immediately very harmonious. Again, beautiful fruit, fully integrated acidity. Then comes grip. Everything rests within itself, very beautiful and harmonious. This is not an indication of early ripening or lack of aging potential; the Orbel almost never experiences closure phases and remains open most of its aging process. "Orbel always works," says Kenneth Barnes, sales manager at St. Antony, quite aptly. It's an absolute fun wine, certainly not in the same category as Rheinhessen's great Rieslings, but it's nevertheless a totally serious, yet charming and approachable wine that simply puts you in a good mood. Especially at this price! ("Sich schön einen Reinorbeln" is the appropriate neologism here, already established in certain circles!)
