About St. Antony Winery

In 2018, Dirk Würtz took over an exceptional winery, the St. Antony winery. A whopping 80 hectares of vineyards, including 15 hectares on steep slopes, the majority of which are certified, are located on the world-famous Roter Hang in Rheinhessen . They are also farmed entirely according to Demeter standards. As Dirk himself says:
“Anyone who cultivates a vineyard characterized by steep slopes in a certified organic manner must be a little crazy.”In addition to Pettenthal and Orbel, the vineyards also include two monopoly sites: Brudersberg and Zehnmorgen. Since the 2019 vintage, the steep slopes have been worked entirely by hand, without the use of machinery. In the cellar, the must and wine are treated with care and minimal intervention to optimally capture and reflect the character of the vineyards. Fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts and entirely according to the wine's rhythm.

It's no wonder that a winery of this size produces such a remarkable range of wines. We're fans of the winery's original specialty: opulent Rheinhessen Riesling from the Roter Hang. The estate wine Riesling Rotschiefer is one of the best estate wines in Germany in its price range and, even after several years of aging, remains an energetic force. St. Antony's "Käferberg" parcel in the Rhinefront Hipping vineyard faces north and therefore differs from the other parcels in its cool microclimate. The Riesling ripens particularly late here and has a special freshness in the Hipping Großes Gewächs .
Two of the St. Antony vineyards stand out for us. Nestled in the heart of the Roter Hang, the Pettenthal vineyard encompasses nearly 10 hectares of red slate, some of Rheinhessen's steepest slopes. The site is sun-drenched and produces the powerful and extremely age-worthy Riesling Nierstein Pettental GG .
The 6 hectares of Orbel vineyards are located at the southern end of the Roter Hang in a side valley. Unlike the Pettenthal vineyards, the dominant soil here is fine slate gravel rather than slate rock. Furthermore, the night temperatures are significantly cooler, which preserves the natural acidity of the Riesling Nierstein Orbel GG and contributes significantly to the wines' playful character.
