The Wine
The Sankt Antony winery owns a very special parcel in Hipping: called Käferberg, it faces entirely north, in contrast to the rest of the site and the entire slope. This gives the house's Hipping a special character, which is also so typical of a Roter Hang. Clear, fresh citrus fruit on the nose. Truly pure in this respect. Lots of lemon and orange, especially orange peel, very fresh and juicy, nothing overripe. A light, slatey smokiness hangs over it, providing a lovely depth. Even hours after opening, this orange-citrus character is predominant and crystal-clear. Initially soft and creamy in the mouth, then acidity and salty piquancy break through, providing the necessary punch, spice, and bite. Added to this is an ethereal, cooling freshness on the palate, again abundant citrus, and now grapefruit alongside the orange—all beautifully composed and fresh. Then comes a long, salty finish full of ripe citrus, salty lemon, piquancy, and light bitterness. Great Riesling from the Roter Hang with substance and emphasis.
