The Wine
Peter Jakob Kühn's Oestrich Quarzit is an exceptional Ortswein (village wine) and always a reliable Riesling from the Rheingau. Sourced from the renowned Doosberg and Lenchen vineyards, as well as the Erste Lage Klosterberg (first vineyard site), it perfectly reflects the terroir of the Rheingau. While the house's second Ortswein, the Hallgarten Rheinschiefer (Hallgarten Rheinschiefer), is somewhat leaner and more acidic, the Quarzit indulges with harmonious fruit and great balance. Upon first swirling, a certain stoniness and smokiness become noticeable, lending the wine additional complexity. Otherwise, the aromas encompass nuances of green and yellow apples, sweet pears, delicate apricot, and fresh hay. A hint of grapefruit also emerges from time to time, providing a tart freshness. On the palate, it is finely polished, bright, and minerally. This is definitely a Riesling with a Burgundian flavor. It flows incredibly velvety across the palate and leaves an impression of perfect harmony. A pleasure every year and an outstanding wine.
