The Wine
The holy grail from Seehof. The Old Vines grow on some of the best Morstein parcels with particularly stony subsoil. South-facing, increasingly less of a quality feature for Riesling these days. Deep-rooted vines, stony subsoil, and perfect water supply from underground veins are, however, the necessary complements to create something truly great. On the nose, delicate yellow fruit notes, fresh, yet also ripe, yellow citrus, all very fine and cool, yet totally fragrant and almost perfumed. Dusty, chalky notes add up, very profound and darkly spicy, then also very herbaceous and spicy. Everything here is in motion, constantly shifting back and forth, a fascinating nose. A super intense attack on the palate, the salted lemon bursts right across the mouth, radiant acidity is present, everything is lined with the finest tannins; a tart, salty citrus firework. The finish feels like an eternity, the wine lingers for minutes. It's so intense and penetrating, it's incredible. It's all about structure and minerality, limestone and salt, finesse yet powerful. An energetic, wiry, and sublime monument. For us, Florian's Alte Reben from Morstein, this vintage once again, is on a par with the really big names from this site, from Rheinhessen, and from Germany in general, when it comes to dry Riesling. Only at a fraction of the price. Even with plenty of aeration, this is totally exciting and drinkable, but with years of bottle aging, a rarely experienced harmony, tranquility, and refinement will emerge, which is worth waiting for and which constitutes the core of this wine. I really can't get a higher recommendation than this; it's an absolute favorite!
