The Wine
Morstein, Brunnenhäuschen & Kirchspiel are well known, but the Steingrube is something of an underdog among Westhofen vineyards. Quite unjustified, as this is where highly mineral, powerful Rheinhessen wines par excellence are produced on solid limestone rock. Florian Fauth is vinifying a Riesling monument from approximately 20-year-old vines, and we grow closer to our hearts with each vintage. Initially quite closed on the nose, the wine opens up with air to reveal yellow fruit, fresh citrus, a touch of lemon zest, herbal spice, and dusty, stony minerality. Over time, it becomes increasingly intense and complex, with a very direct, fragrant and aromatic, yet also tart character overall. Very tart and astringent on the palate, it has powerful tannins and structure. A citrus orchestra that grows ever larger with air, endless chalky stoniness, and salty notes on the finish. Sparse yet incredibly intense, tart and cool, with plenty of punch and power, this is truly impressive. One of Rheinhessen's truly great Rieslings! With plenty of aeration, it's already truly exciting now, and with a few years of bottle aging, it'll be available at its full potential.
