The Wine
Zieregg, one of Austria's great vineyards, home to arguably the country's best Sauvignon Blanc, and now inextricably linked to the Tement winery. The bar is set very high, and Tement's 2019 Zieregg Sauvignon Blanc effortlessly clears it. Quite understated on the nose, very finely spicy, just stone, limestone, herbs, and spice, all delicate, with no fruit at all. Unpretentious, yet refined. Then a thunderous crash on the palate. Extremely precise acidity, piquancy, and endless saltiness, it lingers bone-dry for minutes, framed by some herbs, a touch of lemon, very ethereal, but the core is always stone and salt. Tannins everywhere in the mouth. Uncompromising. It will develop over the years; it's not closed per se right now, but will certainly experience even more open moments, revealing exciting sides and facets along the way. It's best to aerate it properly now, for a day or longer, then it'll be truly enjoyable. Great cinema, a monument in the making!
