The Wine
We call the Westhofen -M- simply "The Little Morstein." Because that's what it is: alongside Florian's top wine, the Morstein Alte Reben, there's the -M-, made from—who would have thought—young vines, or rather, from the material that didn't quite make it into the Alte Reben cuvée. But it's 100% Morstein! The 2020 M displays peach yogurt on the nose, creamy, ripe peach, a subtle spice, then ripe citrus, plenty of lemon and lime. This radiates from the glass, almost vibrating. Some people say that smell is matter. You think you can already smell the intensity that follows on the palate. And that's exactly what happens: in the mouth, the repetition: creamy, full, and with fresh peach, then a ton of citrus and salt, pressure, depth, and power, all very salty, dense, and full-bodied; the wine is full and voluminous without being fat. Tannins coat the mouth, the M has endless grip. All of this continues into the finish: citrus, tannins, stoniness, a very long aftertaste.
The M has great aging potential and will reveal a wonderfully harmonious and full, golden Riesling character in a few years. With a little air in the carafe, however, it already bursts with such tremendous power, complexity, and excitement, yet is both accessible and charming; leaving it in the cellar for a few years will be difficult, if not impossible. A great, complex Riesling, and at a price that's difficult to follow. The Riesling M is perhaps the best proof of our conviction: no one beats Weingut Seehof when it comes to value for money.
