About Faugères AOC

Faugères lies about 50 km west of Montpellier, in the western part of the Languedoc wine-growing region. It is characterized by distinctive slate soils interspersed with sand and limestone. As early as 1982, it was granted its own appellation, for both red and rosé wines, and now also for white wines. The soils here are so barren, at an altitude of about 350 meters, that yields are almost uneconomically low. Nevertheless, the wines are always of distinct character and are often produced by equally strong personalities. Cooperatives play a much smaller role in Faugères than in most other appellations in the Languedoc, and many of the individual producers practice organic or biodynamic farming. The vineyards extend across the seven municipalities of Autignac, Cabrerolles, Caussiniojouls, Faugères, Fos, Laurens, and Roquessels.


Grape varieties in Faugères AOC

Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre are primarily used for red wines and rosés in Faugères. For white wine production, the focus is on Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Rolle, Carignan Blanc, Clairette Blanche, and Macabeo.
