Velich Winery

Velich Winery

Heinz and Robert Velich are known for their complex and balanced white wines from Lake Neusiedl. Numerous small lakes, called "Lacken", create a special microclimate here, which is crucial to the wines' characteristics. The majority of the wines are also fermented and/or aged in oak, which imparts a pleasant spiciness and opulence.

About Velich Winery

Velich Winery Lake Neusiedl

The Velich Winery is located in the picturesque municipality of Apetlon, in Burgenland's Seewinkel nature reserve. The surrounding area is characterized by gravel soils, and Lake Neusiedl is nearby. Brothers Heinz and Robert Velich took over the winery in the 1990s and have since focused on producing complex wines. The vineyards are planted exclusively with white grape varieties such as Welschriesling, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Bouvier. The simple wines are aged in tanks, while the more sophisticated wines are aged in used wooden barrels.

With the deliberately straightforward portfolio, each individual wine is given due attention. Collectively, the wines are known for their serenity and elegance, as well as their ability to clearly reflect their terroir. One example of a local specialty is Velich's Welschriesling , an incredibly lively yet delicate wine, although the grape variety bears no relation to the "original" Riesling.

Tiglat, the first Chardonnay ever to be produced in Burgenland, originated from a single vineyard planted in 1959 and was the winery's first wine to attract worldwide attention. TO , a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Welschriesling, as well as the Chardonnay Darscho , are also wines aged in oak barrels and exude a (southern) Burgundian character: the focus and elegance of the grape variety paired with the finest wood flavors. Velich wines invite leisurely sipping, while you can enjoy the aromas developing from glass to glass.
