About Riesling

Distribution of Riesling

Riesling is a demanding grape variety that produces white wines in Germany, Austria, and Alsace that are considered among the finest in the world. It is not to be confused with Welschriesling. This variety has special requirements, as it ripens late and only reaches full physiological maturity in sites that offer sufficient warmth. This is only possible in warm southern locations; in the cooler regions of Germany, however, it can only be achieved on steep slopes. When Riesling is grown on flat slopes, it results in simple or straightforward wines. Germany is the main area where Riesling is grown, with almost half of the world's Rieslings coming from this country.

The Palatinate and the Moselle are the two largest Riesling growing regions, followed by Rheinhessen. While the Palatinate and Rheinhessen are known for dry Riesling, the Moselle is known for its fruity, sweet Riesling. The quality of the Rieslings from the Rheingau and Nahe is in no way inferior to these. The products from these regions are characterized by their distinctive fragrance, accompanied by a delicate body, lively malic acid, and mineral-fruity aromas. Austrian Rieslings are somewhat broader in their expression but can be just as exquisite, particularly from regions such as the Wachau, the Kamptal, Krems, or the Danube region. The same applies to the (warmer) Alsace, where the wines are often higher in alcohol and sometimes undergo malolactic fermentation. The largest areas under cultivation outside Europe are found in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Moldova. However, the wines from these regions differ significantly in style.

Character of Riesling

Riesling is undoubtedly the world's most expressive and long-lasting white wine grape variety. It impresses with its aromatic diversity, delicacy, and lively acidity, making it an excellent accompaniment to food. Furthermore, it is rarely aged in oak barrels. Depending on its origin, sweetness, and age, Rieslings can develop completely different characters. For much of the late 20th century, Riesling was underestimated and underappreciated. However, this grape variety is slowly but surely making a comeback. The wine captivates with powerful aromas characterized by minerals, flowers, lime, and honey. Over time, it develops an oily fragrance reminiscent of petroleum and saffron, especially in warm climates. Riesling produces legendary sweet wines in its native Germany. Due to climate change, fine, firm, dry wines are now also produced there, as well as lighter, sweeter styles in between. Riesling remains the noblest grape variety in Germany, Alsace, and Austria.
